Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 9, 2012 - FUSION Halifax, a local advocate in volunteerism and community engagement is celebrating some of the city’s most talented volunteers.
On Thursday, May 12, FUSION Halifax will host its Second Thursday event, an informal networking meet-up, at Brussels Restaurant & Brasserie from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature a series of local volunteers sharing their stories of personal growth and fulfillment. The evening will feature the stories of three local volunteers to create awareness around the need for volunteerism and meaningful volunteer opportunities.
One such person is Lisa Weatherhead, whose partner was diagnosed with cancer. Lisa explains, “Participating as a volunteer with Relay For Life made me realize I was not alone. It empowered me to do something to fight back.”
“Volunteers such as Lisa are the backbone of our community. They donate their time, skills and compassion to create a better tomorrow,” explains Kelly Wilson, Director of Volunteerism and Membership for FUSION Halifax. “Nova Scotians are generous with their time, the province ranks among the highest in Canada for the number of volunteers and the amount of time provided, but there is a disconnect between willing volunteers and available opportunities.”
To address this gap, FUSION Halifax launched Volunteerhere.ca - an online hub where not-for-profit organizations can connect with young, talented and enthusiastic Haligonians who are looking to make a difference. Since its inception in July 2010, Volunteerhere.ca has advertised over 120 volunteer positions in our community.
