Why do you live in Halifax now?
I came back to Halifax to be close to my family. Having my family close grounds me and gives me strength. The reason I live on the peninsula is that I want to be part of a thriving community of mixed residential and commercial, with all kinds of people and all kinds of skills that make up a thriving community that supports itself.
What do you love about living in Halifax/being an East Coaster?
I love being able to walk everywhere, to work, to the park, to friends and especially to visit with my family. I value the nature that surrounds us and the opportunities we have to spend time playing outside in our gardens, at the beach in all our beautiful public spaces.
What is your most memorable Halifax experience?
Going away and coming home. Anyone who has left knows this feeling. The excitement of getting away and then the equal or greater excitement of coming back home.
Why is it great to be young in Halifax?
Halifax is big enough to provide great opportunities but not so big that you get lost in the shuffle. I was not here for my twenties, but for my thirties it is great because the business community is accessible.
What would you change about Halifax?
I would like to see more communities at the level of street associations and also at the neighbourhood and city level. Everyone is busy but I think that Halifax could be an even better place if everyone got together in the backyard, on the sidewalk in the park and just talked about how we can improve our streets, neighbourhoods and cities. At a person by person level Haligonians need to be more engaged.
What is your favorite restaurant/pub?
Jane’s on the Common
What is your favorite meeting spot?
Coastal Coffee
What would you tell a new young person moving to Halifax?
Get out and get involved. Find the thing you want to work on and join up. You have to be persistent, sometimes volunteer organizations just don’t have the resources to return your call the first time, so call again.
If someone were to ask you, who should I ‘know’ in Halifax. Who would you recommend they meet?
Why limit yourself to just a few people to know…Meet as many people as
you can, so you can build an amazing network of dynamic and engaging
contacts.
