What is the burning issue, your passion? What keeps you up at night?
My current role as an Estate and Trust Advisor puts me in front of people going through a very difficult time in life. Daily, I am reminded how precious and fragile life really is. Ensuring that I am living life to the fullest and enjoying the ride is what keeps me awake and drives both my ambition and my goals.
Tell us a little about yourself
Musician at heart since the age of 14 when I learned how to play ‘Yellow Submarine’ by the Beatles on the guitar. Toured professionally back in the early 90’s, and had two videos on Much Music. A song that I co-wrote was featured in the Canadian movie ‘Harmony Cats’ directed by Sandy Wilson, starring Canadian country sensation Lisa Brokop. In 2004, a song that I co-produced and played bass on ‘Awakening’ was in the Top 100 in Ottawa, on the #1 CHUM Station (www.derekjones.ca). Currently recording/writing with Tony Nader and ‘Let’s Be Frank’ here in Halifax, and teaching music part time to budding musicians. Married and have two beautiful children. And…oh yeah…I have been in the financial advice business since 1996, working with several of Canada’s largest financial institutions helping people achieve their dreams and goals. Life is good and only getting better.
What do you love about living in Halifax/being an East Coaster?
Quality of life. Quality of the music scene. Fresh lobster, smell of the salt water, and always being 5 minutes from a Beach.
What is your most memorable Halifax experience?
Walking over Citadel Hill with my children when Paul McCartney was in town warming up for his show. The music was dancing around the buildings and was crystal clear.
Why is it great to be young in Halifax?
Change is constant, but every now and then a significant transformational change takes place. I feel that Halifax is at this point in time, and to be part of this and have a meaningful voice in how and where change is affected is very exciting.
What would you change about Halifax?
Public transportation and bike paths I would love to see a mono-rail system similar to Sydney Australia. Perhaps even Harbour taxi’s.
What is your favorite restaurant/pub?
Emma’s Eatery in Eastern Passage
What is your favorite meeting spot?
Anywhere with good conversation. Too many great places to choose.
What would you tell a new young person moving to Halifax?
Check out Niche SupperClub and Mike Cowie as your first venue. This IS Halifax.
If someone were to ask you, who should I ‘know’ in Halifax. Who would you recommend they meet?
Easy. Christian Weisenburger, lawyer at Beyond The Box Law. Great guy, great advice, great attitude and knows everyone.
